I put the grains in the pain.  You have to stir it pretty often to keep them in suspension. 

 

The same method was used for all surfaces I might step on (the pain was a big motivator).  On the non-skid pattern you can’t even see it, on the smoth surfaces you need to get e few inches from the finish to see it.

That’s what I was afraid would happen.  Did you put the grains in the paint or sprinkle it on the deck?  What about the coaming and the cockpit areas, did you add it there also, and did it affect the appearance.

YES.  Sorry for shouting, but this is a critical issue.  On my first go round I did not add the anti-skid.  About a week later I motored out during a very thick fog.  Everything was OK until I latter went forward on a now damp deck.  When I stepped on the forward hatch, the one that slopes down, I went down – hard.  It almost knocked me and my back (latissimus dorsi, not bone thank God) was in spasms for a good week.

 

On the second coat I mixed in some Petit no-skid grains.  Worked great.

 

The paint I used was Interlux Toplaq.  Wonderful finish.

For those of you who have painted their deck, do you have to add an antiskid compound over the molded antiskid area to keep them from being slick? I need to paint a Catalina 34 I bought that was damaged during Katrina and I am considering options.  What works, what doesn’t?  I am currently considering two part polyurethane coatings.
