I had the same as you do currently. Reverse is much better for me now, both thrust and steering.

What did you get out of the prop replacement that was a big improvement?

Engine runs strong and forward propulsion is fine, but almost nothing in reverse.

I did it a couple of times by myself; it is a major feat of contortion. Then, when my shaft was bent by wrapping my next door neighbor’s dock line (thanks, pal), I upgraded to a dripless stuffing box. My bilge is now bone dry, and the cabin smells ever so much better. I did the (Atomic 4) Indigo prop at the same time, and that is also a big improvement.

i recently adjusted mine for the first time, also, using the wm wrench and a pipe wrench.  got a traditional model  and with removing the strbd access door and frame was able to get in there and make the adjust.

Do not attempt to adjust with engine running.  Could be very dangerous.  I use a wrench that West Marine sells to adjust the packing nut and a pipe wrench.  Hold the packing nut with the pipe wrench and loosen the locking nut with the special wrench.  Remember you are dealing with right hand threads, that is, facing aft, to loosen the locking nut turn clockwise, tighten the packing nut, by turning clockwise and then hold the packing nut while turning the locking nut counter clockwise.  To make it very easy you need two people.  I have a dinette model and accessibility to the engine on both sides is relatively easy.  I have a friend with a traditional model and getting access to the port side is difficult.!   Adjusting the packing gland is very easy with a person on each side to do the job.
