You need to do a simple test to know your options. Turn on some cabin lights with the engine stopped and rotate your battery switch slowly. If the lights come as your approach 1 or A and never blink (brightness may change once but not blink) when you pass through ALL and never blink (brightness may change once but not blink) as you go to 2 or B and only finally go dark at OFF then you have a “make before break” switch in good condition. These switches do go bad so this is a good test to repeat from time to time.

 

A “make before break” switch can be rotated while the engine is running. Running the alternator into “ALL” can be bad for it since it was designed to really only charge one deeply discharged battery at a time. This was a $65 lesson on Wing Tip. Two nearly fully charged batteries are fine on ALL since their charge currents are already greatly reduced. I usually give each battery a half an hour by itself before going to ALL. If you just coming off a shore power charger and you know they are toped off then ALL is fine also.

 

If your cabin lights blinked or went off between switch positions then you have either a “break before make” switch or degraded “make before break” switch and you should not rotate this switch while the engine is running. If you do at the point where the lights flickered or went out the alternator will lose its load and its output voltage will shoot go up dramatically and when it does it may destroy the alternator output diodes.

 

You’ll see products like Zap Stop advertised to protect your alternators diodes. If I had a “break before make” switch I was unwilling to change I would consider Zap Stop. I might also install a Zap Stop if I was going to circumnavigate or sail to Hawaii just in case some rummy sailor rotates my switch to OFF without thinking.

If my engine battery is the #2 battery and my #1 powers everything else, once I have the engine running is it ok to switch from #2 to #1 or should I leave it on All?

I used a hair dryer to warm up vinyl lettering on a window so that I could get hold of an end and start pulling it off.  It came off in pieces.  Goo-Gone will get rid of the adhesive residule. Below are a couple of links regarding removing vinyl letters:
