My fenders only sometimes hang off the sides while sailing. The rest
of the time they are hanging from the jib sheets...dangling actually. Fenders
on the side help keep you from hitting your head when you fall over board and
when they dangle for the jib sheets they help with sail shape.

P.S. The fenders help just in case a powerboat brushes against the side, too.
P.S.S. Maybe we can come up with a top ten list why people keep their fenders
hanging on the side while under sail?
