It doesn't matter if the sail is loose footed or not, it still controls the
shape of the sail. It pull down on the boom which intern pulls down on the end
of the sail. I wonder about your traveler.is it end boom or mid boom? If end
boom there is no question, but if mid boom I would worry about the force needed
to break the boom in the middle. With the sail's foot in the track it
transfers the pressure more evenly to the mid boom traveler.

I have a theoretical question. I have a loose footed main. With that in mind
and knowing that the sail only contacts the boom in two locations, does the
vang serve any purpose? I can tighten the luff with the Cunningham and the foot
with the outhaul.
