I've see white and recording tape rust. The point of red is visibility,
I think. Can't go wrong with it. As an alternative for luff tells,
consider buying a skein of red wool yarn (the synthetics have a tendency
to cling to sails) and sewing them in with one tiny hole and a knot on
either side of the sail. About 4 cents a sail. I'm still using the
ball of yarn I bought 35 years ago. Used on six of my boats. I know:
can't do red portside, green to starboard. Never missed it, and sorta
felt those Davis thingies were kind of patronizing. I mean I know
which side of the boat is port.
Then there were those guys in tight racing around the fleet who
responded to my Starboard! hail with "Port!" "Madiera!" "
Beaujolais!" Those guys. Good days.
