I suspect it's one of those rare times when a lesser built boat is an advantage. A lit pile of gun powder looks like a sparkler, wrap it in paper and it's a fire cracker.
There was a nameless 35 footer in Sausalito that had photo published in Latitude 38 after a gas explosion on board. It was comedic relief by comparison to the Irwin. When the dust settled in Sausalito the deck had come to rest on the top of the stanchions from stem to stern but the mast was still standing.
