If you are racing, then adding weight just to improve balance is slow, and crew discomfort (being forward and probably outboard)is part of the package. If you are not racing, why are you concerned with the stern being a little low? Moving the weight you have to carry anyway to achieve balance is much better. Most of the serious guys I race with remove the OB and place in on the cabin sole as far forward as possible, move the anchor(s) down there too, plus extra sails, etc. Adding weight you don't need is increasing wetted area, which is one of the biggest drag components.

I have been placing ballast (150 lbs of water tanks) under the forward bunk. Has anyone had experience and if so how much ballast did you place, and what kind? We regularly sail with four in the cockpit which is dragging down the stern without sending everyone forward, an inconvenient and not comfortable arrangement for a standard C-27. If I can find lead pigs I would like to place about 800 lbs or more there instead of the water containers. Dave Hoy WYANOKEE #6295 Camden, Maine.
