I have been kind of holding my breath, but I have to say something. I race
regularly on some of the faster C27s here in Annapolis and I have never been
on a single C27 that was racing with anything but the bare minimum of weight.
Tim and I actually did an overnight race a few years back where the damn
skipper (also a very good friend) didn't bring NEARLY enough beer and we ran
out well before sunup. Maybe he miscalculated because it was the first time
Tim raced with him... But honestly I think he had 3 beers per person for a 12
hour race. It sucked. We finished second so all was forgotten upon arrival
in Solomons (and being able to scarf down some $1 bloodies.

But not so much that when I agreed at the last minute to do the same race
with him this year, I made him promise me we had enough beer. Well this year
it blew like shit and we were in in about 6 hours. 50 mile spinnaker run and
we get in after getting the crap beat out of us at about 2:30 and again we
are out of beer. Remember that we were too busy all night to be drinking much
if at all. I later asked and was told that he only had about 8 beers on, 4
bottles of water and had even made his wife take all the extra baby wipes off
the boat to save weight.

BTW. 3 of the 4 of us are over 200#.

I just don't buy the extra weight, but try whatever you think might work for
you. All I can say is that the boats around here wouldn't consider carrying
any weight they didn't have to. Especially up front.

One point that has barely been mentioned is stabilizing this weight. In a
knockdown shifting 800 lbs of extra ballast might prove a hazard. Not to
mention I wonder what damage a sizable chunk of lead would do to what got in
its way in such circumstances...

I have to wonder how poor your performance is with 4 people (sizable adults
I guess)in the cockpit. Are you racing? If not, is the added cost, hazard,
etc, worth the questionable added performance?
