Sounds like the way that you use the moth balls eliminates most of the
risk. As to pest strips, I would much rather use the moth balls! EPA
recently changed the rules on these strips eliminating many of their
uses because of health concerns.
Re: the big wasp nest. I believe that falls under Rule 14: AVOID CONTACT

You know, I've been mildly concerned about the mothballs. Seem like
everything I can find to keep out the wasps and spiders is problematic
in small spaces. A lot of guys in the marina use pest strips, but I
was pretty concerned about them when I read the label. At least with
the moth balls, when I arrive on Friday I throw them away and air the
boat out before spending any time below. So I'm not doing "prolonged
breathing."
Heard a story Sat night ...
Wind kicked up in the middle of a race Saturday, and a boat went for a
headsail change coming off a downwind leg and heading back up. Guy
pulled the seldom used 110 bag out of the v berth and pulled a BIG
wasp nest out with it. In the resultant confusion, they went from
first place to out of contention.

I would bet that it's the moth balls that are keeping the insects out,
not the Bounce. Keeping insects away (or dead) is what they are
designed to do.
At the risk of being seen as a scold (don't run with that pencil or
you'll poke your eye out), I would be very careful when using moth
balls inside a boat. There is increasing concern about the inhalation
hazard from them (The box says "avoid prolonged breathing of vapors"),
as well as their attractiveness as "candy" to kids. Here is a link to
