Well, for what it's worth, my West Marine soft chair is comfortable for several hours, and has a stack of pockets, lanyard, D-rings, and other comforts--plus a cupholder. But I guess I could always use my climbing chalkbag for a cupholder. Regardless, I don't see how I could fall out of it, no matter how much I might be inclined to over-use the cupholder <grin>. But I guess it's not the typical chair. And I'll admit I've never used the old board style. I'd definitely agree with you on the climbing harness; they're great, even if they have to be fitted to the person.
For those who don't know, there are girl models if you prefer to send the admiral aloft. Myself, I think I handle heights better than Jeane. And I trust her more with the backup line. My mind tends to wander. It's one thing to have devices that are more comfortable, but it's wholly another matter that a modern climbing harness is about 200% safer...they are virtually impossible to fall out of... I'm good for about 20 minutes in a chair until the board cuts off circulation to my lower legs and I cant feel my own feet. A climbing harness I can take for an hour, use my feet tactically and not feel like a lump of meat being hoisted aloft. anyway... tf ALways a D-shackle and Never a snap (unless you tape the crap out of it) > Sierra Trading Post always seems to carry three or four models at closeout > prices.
