David,

I'll second Bob's comment..

My .02 ?
Don't do anything just because someone else did it...Too often suggestions made
are based on an anecdotal experience that may not apply to your needs.
Any decision you make should be based on what YOU determine is your style of
use and where you sail.

Here's my input....
Early on I changed to 10º out.. The Previous owner had 5 degree IN..
10º Out.....experience ??.
Positive: Ease of walking along the deck (important for Old legs)...(?) Fender
tied to the lifeline hangs almost straight down ( I don't do this, but, some
folks do.)
Negative: Rafting up with anyone is a problem. With the 10 degree sticking out
I DO tangle with other's lifelines or hull.

Good luck with your Upgrading project.

David, definitely think about whether you want to change your stanchions to
10* in or out, 5* in or out, or straight up. On my '85, I moved the two
nearest the shrouds to out (I think 5*) in Nov. 01. The cost for the four (2
each side) was $217.46 from Catalina Direct. I can now walk around the shrouds
and stay inside the lifelines!
