The motor tilts up and clears the water (unless my son and I are both in the back of the boat :-) ). I haven't modified the opening, but the PO may have. I did have to notch the lazarette hatch and cover the notch with a piece of canvas; the 4-strokes tilt up higher than the older 2-strokes.

I don't believe you can get either remote controls or electric start with the T-6. I haven't really found it troublesome to reach back into the lazarette to start the motor or to adjust speed and direction (although I must admit remote controls would be nice).

Dick,
You say your Tohatsu 6 will fit in the standard cutout; are you able to tilt it up to clear the water?  Also, I really like having the electric start and cockpit controls that my Evinrude 9.9 provides.  But, it's an '85 and I'd like something newer, but, like you, I don't want to modify the transom cutout.  By any chance does the small Tohatsu come with remote controls (at least) and electric start?

Encore has a Tohatsu 6 4-stroke that sits in the hole in the transom. She has a limit on the motor size due to the dimensions of the hole (I really don't want to start cutting :-) ). We run 5 to 5.5 knots with the main up in the region from Ensenada to Los Angeles and out to Catalina. I've never really felt the need for anything larger out here in the Peaceful, er, Pacific Ocean. Besides, I can get from Ensenada to Dana Point (a distance of about 120 miles including a stop in San Diego for customs) on less than 12 gallons of gas.
