Pete Seeger, of course founded Hudson River Sloop Clearwater to advocate for clean up of the Hudson River in the 60's. The Sloop Clearwater is 40 years old this year and her little sister that Pete and Toshi built with their own money, the Woody Guthrie, is 30 this year. Any of you who know about Pete will know that he walked with Dr King and was present at Selma. Yesterday he was a joyful celebrant at the Lincoln Memorial MLK/Obama event at the specific invitation of Bruce Springsteen. What you might find interesting is that Pete participated in this event only with the understanding that he had to be back in tiny Beacon, NY, where he resides, to participate with local school kids in a MLK sing at a local church and to participate with other musicians in a group sing at the local Howland Center today, Bruce apparently told him, please come, I will personally get you to DC and get you home in time. I am not sure how Bruce Springsteen pulled this off and have not had a chance to ask Pete the transport details, but Pete, who will be 90 in May, was indeed back in Beacon today participating in these events. He had spent most of last week practicing with a local 5th grade class and I had the joy of singing along with them (as a member of the audience) and with Pete and other local musicians at the Howland Center this evening. He is a most remarkable man.
