*New Report: /Supporting Research: Environments, Administration and Libraries/*

This report <http://www.oclc.org/research/publications/library/2011/2011-10.pdf> [pdf] synthesizes the results of two parallel studies of research support services in US and UK universities that OCLC Research and the UK's Research Information Network (RIN) undertook last year.

The following findings from the joint studies are highlighted in the report:

·Universities face a diversity of needs and transnational challenges as they adjust to manage their researchers' outputs.

·Libraries in recent years have been struggling to make a positive impact on the scholarly work of researchers with relatively little effect.

·Many institutionally provided research support services are not appreciated by researchers in universities, who consider them marginal at best and burdensome at worst.

·Although the contribution of libraries to preserving the scholarly archive is not certain, we cannot abandon the attempt to reach a shared understanding internationally.

·A shared view of a scholarly archive for the digital age is needed to further develop capabilities and realize value.

This report is the latest in a series of OCLC Research reports resulting from our Research Information Management thematic focus of work, the goal of which is to help reach a collective understanding of the responsibilities of, and opportunities for, libraries in a changed research environment.

*Staff from Partnership Institutions Named to Distinguished NARA Advisory Committee*

The Special Media Preservation Division at the US National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has invited several staff from institutions that are affiliated with the OCLC Research Library Partnership to serve on its External Reference Committee for its ongoing Quality Assurance/Quality Control Project. The committee is composed of people with subject matter expertise in areas such as digital still images and text, digital moving images, and digital audio. It will serve as a sounding board and information exchange venue as well as provide high level feedback on the theoretical concepts and implementable actions developed by the NARA project team.

The 36-member committee includes OCLC Research Senior Program Officer Ricky Erway and the following staff from OCLC Research Library Partnership institutions:

·The Getty Research Institute: Anne Blecksmith

·Indiana University: Mike Casey

·Library of Congress: Carl Fleischhauer, Jimi Jones, Steve Puglia, James Snyder, and Ken Weisman

·Museum of Modern Art: Erik Landsberg

·Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey: Isaiah Beard

·Stanford University: Hannah Frost and Matthew Pearson

·University of South Carolina: Greg Wilsbacher

The fact that over a third of the committee members are from Partner institutions is a testament to the expertise within the Partnership.
