The PCC Secretariat and the Library of Congress Policy and Standards
Division (PSD) have received questions on fifteen new data elements
defined in the MARC 21 Authority Format and their authorization for use
in AACR2 name and series authority records. These fifteen new data
elements (046, 336, 370-377, 380-384) support /RDA: Resource
Description and Access/ with respect to dates, places and several other
elements associated with an entity for which an authority record is
created. However, the elements are not restricted to use in RDA
authority records. They may be included in AACR2 records as well.
The PCC currently does not have a NACO policy regarding the addition of
these new data elements in AACR2 records. Whether or not to add them to
AACR2 authority records, and which ones to add, are a local policy
decision at this time.
A PCC task group is currently determining a "best practice" for the
application of these fields in RDA authority records. Until that task
is completed, a table created by PSD and the PCC Secretariat is
available for those PCC NACO institutions wishing to use these data
elements in AACR2 or RDA authority records. The table 1) describes the
fifteen new MARC 21 Authority Format tags and terms; 2) maps them where
applicable to the corresponding RDA element and RDA instruction number;
and, 3) provides notes that should assist in the inclusion of these data
element in AACR2 authority records. The PCC urges that catalogers take
time to become familiar with the content and use of RDA and the MARC 21
Authority Format before including these elements in NACO records.
This table has been posted to the PCC website:

As there is no current PCC NACO policy regarding the use of these data
elements, as a courtesy, PCC institutions that plan to include them in
AACR2 authority records are requested to notify the PCC Secretariat
([email protected] <mailto:[email protected]>) that they will be adding these
fields to AACR2 authority records.
