Members of the PCC community,

The last of the three reports of the RDA-related task groups formed last June, from the PCC RDA Decisions Needed Task Group, has now been posted and linked from http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/RDA-Decision-TG.html . Thanks to the group, led by Beth Picknally Camden, for their thorough and thoughtful report.

The report attempts to enumerate all the decisions that will need to be made and documented as part of having the PCC ready for RDA implementation. The Task Group has also assigned priorities to each item and designated responsible parties. The intent is to have all of the High, Medium, and Low priority items acted on by the summer of 2012, which would provide six months for the documentation and training that would be needed prior to a possible January 2013 implementation. Ideally, most of the High priority items should be resolved by December 2011, so that those PCC BIBCO and CONSER member institutions that wish to start cataloging using RDA will have sufficient policies and procedures, documentation, and training materials in place to switch to the new code.

To address the first item in the Task Group's recommendations (G-1), the PCC Policy Committee has agreed to form a subgroup to review the LC PSD RDA Policy Statements, which is critical documentation that will be completed by November. This group will be essential in helping PoCo determine the extent to which PCC will follow LC policy or will need to draft PCC Policy Statements. Such exceptions, hopefully rare, would be added to the LCPSs rather than creating a separate set of cataloging documentation.

The PCC Policy Committee accepts the task group's report and we anticipate it will be a living document with status updates frequently added. We now welcome community comment (either over PCCLIST or via email to [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> ) by October 21.

More importantly, the spreadsheet outlines all the work PCC needs to accomplish to successfully implement RDA. It also identifies groups to be responsible for making sure the necessary decisions get made and documented. If you would like to be considered for membership on the various subgroups that will be formed in the coming months, please volunteer by writing of your interest and what your area of expertise is, to [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> . Please cite the specific Issue ID number(s) from the spreadsheet. It is not necessary to have been an RDA test site library or an active contributor of RDA records to participate.

Thanks,

   John
