*Reminder: Join Us for the OCLC Research Library Partnership Briefing in Washington, D.C., *

*Monday, 27 February from 10:30 a.m.--noon at the Natural History Museum*

/Open to OCLC Research Library Partners and Special Invitees Only/

Given the general austerity measures being taken by most institutions, we are experimenting with the notion of holding frequent regional update sessions. These will typically be scheduled around our staff travel, and other events where we expect at least some of our Partners will be gathering; in this way, we hope that our Partner staff will be able to stretch their travel budgets a little further and still be able to stay informed about current activities and participation opportunities within the Partnership.

Our next Partnership Briefing will take place this Monday, 27 February in Washington, D.C. from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Natural History Museum on 10th Street & Constitution Avenue in Library Training Rooms CE-107 & CE-108. The Library is located on the 1st Floor (East Court). Attendees should use the Constitution Avenue entrance to the museum. We are grateful to the Smithsonian Institution Libraries for graciously offering these meeting rooms.

We'll use the time together to take a look at some new projects and initiatives that have recently launched (or will be started in the next few months). Each of these projects represent opportunities for your institutions to get involved, and in many cases we are looking for your input, so we'll also have time for group discussion.

·*Registration has been extended through the end of the day today, Friday, 24 February*. Please RSVP to Jeanette McNicol <mailto:[email protected]?subject=RVSP%20Washington%20DC%20briefing> today with the names, job titles and e-mail addresses of everyone from your institution who will attend.

Senior Program Officer Merrilee Proffitt <http://www.oclc.org/research/people/proffitt.htm> will facilitate the session and looks forward to meeting staff from many of our old and established as well as new Partner Institutions in the Washington, D.C. area. Do you have questions about your affiliation? About a project or activity? Feel free to get in touch at any time with any of us <http://www.oclc.org/research/people/default.htm>---we're always happy to hear directly from our Partners!

Save the Date and Get Involved! "Libraries Rebound: Embracing Mission
 and Maximizing Impact"

5--6 June 2012 in Philadelphia, PA USA

/For OCLC Research Library Partners Only/

Based on input from the OCLC Research Library Partnership, this colloquium will focus on the implementation of distinctive services that better align the library with the mission of its parent institution. In order to ensure effective impact, proactive research libraries are beginning to:

 * redirect staff and reconfigure services to provide direct support
for the research mission of their parent institution,
 * seek to align special collections with the mission of the parent
institution, going beyond tradition and prestige, and
 * recognize library space and its uses as a powerful way to project
value and enter into new partnerships.

---All three involve forging new alliances, creating community, and releasing new value from our assets.

*The plenary sessions at this event will be based on the following themes:*

*Theme 1: Directly supporting researchers *
A Subject-Specific Research Information Liaison possesses information management skills and subject expertise, and works directly with researchers on their information needs as they plan, carry out, and disseminate their research. In this theme we will explore how to develop a team of research liaisons who are committed to working with researchers in a particular discipline throughout the research workflow.

*Theme 2: Aligning special collections with the institutional mission*
With an emphasis on engaging directly with the mission of their parent institution, custodians of rare and unique materials are being challenged in many ways. In this theme we will explore how special collections are coping with the challenges and how they are initiating a broad range of activities on campus and beyond to sustain and redirect the future of their collections.

*Theme 3: Exploiting space as a distinctive asset*
Libraries have moved beyond thinking that "coffee and comfort" represent the optimal reconfiguration of library space. In this theme we'll go beyond moving furniture and explore opportunities to develop space in ways that support partnerships with other campus units, transforming perceptions of the library and making direct connections to the teaching or research goals of the university.

This colloquium will feature OCLC Research Library Partners and other distinguished individuals who have demonstrated leadership in these areas. The presentations will offer guidance on assessing appropriateness, dealing with staffing practicalities, launching a program, and sustaining a successful program. Participants will have adequate time to discuss the difficulties and opportunities associated with each of these change areas. We will aim to come away from the meeting with a refreshed view of what partners are doing to lead in these areas, and to chart a common course to success.

We'll meet for a full day on 5 June and adjourn at noon on 6 June. An OCLC Research Library Partnership Briefing will follow from noon--2:30 on 6 June. Registration information along with a complete schedule will be coming soon. For now, mark your calendar and plan to join us in Philadelphia!

*Staff from all OCLC Research Library Partnership institutions are invited to attend this meeting.**We also invite you to GET INVOLVED!* Each theme will have three speakers and a reactor panel. Are you in the midst of planning for change in one or more of these areas? We would love to incorporate you into one of our reactor panels! *"Increasing Access to Special Collections" Article Featured in LIBER Quarterly, Volume 21 (2012), No. 2*

Written by Senior Program Officer Ricky Erway, the article distills recommendations from nine OCLC Research reports about digitization of and access to special collections. The article is based on a presentation that Ricky gave at the LIBER Annual Conference 2011 <http://bibliotecnica.upc.edu/LIBER2011/> in Barcelona, Spain on 29 June 2011. Both the article and the presentation should be of interest to everyone who provides access to special collections.
