 NGTS Update: December 2012

The NGTS Management Team <http://tumblr.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=85ffaef57f3e9d8521a1fa162&id=286a943e90&e=11d365e0c5> and the Systemwide Operations and Planning Advisory Group (SOPAG <http://tumblr.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=85ffaef57f3e9d8521a1fa162&id=b83e7b924d&e=11d365e0c5>) continue to develop the slate of action projects which will begin in 2013 and build upon the work of the Power of Three groups (POTs <http://tumblr.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=85ffaef57f3e9d8521a1fa162&id=5f93f5b2d2&e=11d365e0c5>).

POT 1 Build the system-wide infrastructure for digital collections

Lightning Team (LT) 3B <http://tumblr.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=85ffaef57f3e9d8521a1fa162&id=d0873295c7&e=11d365e0c5> was charged with evaluating selected systemwide access systems that could potentially meet the discovery and display requirements of the UC Library Digital Collection (UCLDC), as defined by the work of POT 1 Lightning Teams 1A <http://tumblr.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=85ffaef57f3e9d8521a1fa162&id=90b1e8909c&e=11d365e0c5> and 3A <http://tumblr.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=85ffaef57f3e9d8521a1fa162&id=5631566d9b&e=11d365e0c5>. To conduct its evaluation, LT3B created a heuristic that combined widely accepted web usability standards with the discovery and display requirements drafted by LT1A and LT3A. Working in small groups, the team evaluated each system against the requirements. The groups organized data into requirements categories and then analyzed the findings by a differing combination of team members. The team’s overall findings were that no one system met the majority of the requirements, but that each had areas of strength that could be referenced in the design and development of the UCLDC access interface.

Lightning Team 3B has submitted a draft report of its work to POT 1, which will review and provide feedback before the end of December.

Lightning Team 3C <http://tumblr.us2.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=85ffaef57f3e9d8521a1fa162&id=27e7d3ae08&e=11d365e0c5> is charged with exploring the amount of effort required to implement a crawling and/or harvesting access system that can provide a springboard for a future UC Libraries Digital Collection (UCLDC) access system.

To fulfill the charge, LT3C developed an experimental system that combines harvesting and crawling strategies to build a very basic discovery and display system. It also developed a prototype of a registry concept designed both to alert the UCLDC of new collections and to provide a mechanism for capturing collection level metadata. The experimental system was evaluated against a refined list of discovery and display requirements and assessed in terms of the relative worth of such an effort. The registry concept (supported by the previous work of POT1 LT3A) has been vetted through a survey of collection owners.

       POTs 3, 4, and 5 conclude work

The NGTS Management Team has thanked and discharged POT 3 for its work to accelerate the processing of archival and manuscript collections. SOPAG has asked the Heads of Special Collections (HOSC <http://tumblr.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=85ffaef57f3e9d8521a1fa162&id=8362a6478d&e=11d365e0c5>) to implement the Archivists’ Toolkit Recommendations <http://tumblr.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=85ffaef57f3e9d8521a1fa162&id=e858eca00c&e=11d365e0c5> produced by POT 3. POT 4 has also completed its work <http://tumblr.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=85ffaef57f3e9d8521a1fa162&id=5391b3c761&e=11d365e0c5> on simplifying the recharge process and the Acquisitions Common Interest Group (ACIG <http://tumblr.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=85ffaef57f3e9d8521a1fa162&id=c8446a975e&e=11d365e0c5>) will continue to monitor the process for scheduled recharges for CDL co-investments. SOPAG has forwarded the final report <http://tumblr.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=85ffaef57f3e9d8521a1fa162&id=da9852a9f9&e=11d365e0c5> of POT 5 evaluating the decision-making process for Shared Cataloging Program (SCP <http://tumblr.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=85ffaef57f3e9d8521a1fa162&id=b91c6dc260&e=11d365e0c5>) cataloging priorities to the Joint Steering Committee on Shared Collections (JSC <http://tumblr.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=85ffaef57f3e9d8521a1fa162&id=e3ebc60152&e=11d365e0c5>) for adoption of its recommendations.
