Cataloging workshop: Cataloging for non-catalogers
* Tuesday, March 26, 2013
* 8:30am-4:00pm
* UC Davis campus
Have you been assigned cataloging duties but don?t have sufficient skills to
complete the task? Well, this is the workshop for you! Buzz Haughton, a
cataloger since 1980, will give a concentrated introduction to the basics of
good and accurate cataloging. Buzz is thoroughly familiar with cataloging
materials in a multitude of formats and is completely conversant with the
Library of Congress Subject Headings and National Library of Medicine MeSH
controlled vocabularies and their classification schemes.
The morning session will focus on ISBD (International Standard Bibliographic
Description) and MARC essentials, including reviewing all pertinent MARC fields
and how they?re used. Distinctive formats including books, analytics,
periodicals, audiovisuals, web pages and computer programs will be covered,
along with copy cataloging techniques. The afternoon session will give
attendees time to practice honing their cataloging skills with an OCLC test
account. Buzz will have sample items to catalog, however, attendees are
encouraged to bring their own items or web pages they?d like to catalog and
want some help with.? Buzz will also discuss the new cataloging code, RDA, and
the controversy surrounding the future of MARC.
Registration is $50 for SLA Members, $65 for non-SLA members, and $40 for
students/SLA retired. Please register by Monday, March 18th: space is limited!
