Program Description: <http://www.baynetlibs.org/2013/04/02/event-may-3-how-data-can-help-create-b etter-communities-with-dr-jonathan-reichental-register-now/> In an era of government deficits it's comforting to note that there is an abundant surplus of data. But until recently, leveraging value from data beyond its initial creation and use has been difficult. Today, this picture is changing. A combination of new technologies and a more enlightened emerging leadership is finding innovative ways to put data to work. Beyond much desired transparency and accountability, making government data more easily accessible is creating a wave of valuable community applications. In this talk, Dr. Reichental will discuss these transformational items and help the audience to think about how they too can participate in this new data economy. Dr. Jonathan Reichental is currently an award-winning Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the City of Palo Alto where he is focusing on modernizing the existing technology environment, implementing enhancements to the citywide SAP implementation, as well as pushing the boundaries of innovation in local government such as open data and broader civic participation through mobile devices. Jonathan was recently awarded the distinction of being one of the 25 Doers, Dreamers, and Drivers in Government in America in 2013. -- Sarah Naumann, MLIS BayNet Board, Academic Representative Reference Librarian | Mills College 5000 MacArthur Blvd | Oakland, CA 94613 [email protected] | 510.430.2029 http://www.mills.edu/academics/library/List archives and other configuration options are available at https://lists.gseis.ucla.edu/sympa/info/calix
