The University of Chicago Library invites applications for the position of
Cataloger.

The cataloger is responsible for creating original cataloging for all newly
acquired continuing resources in all formats. The Library is an active
contributor to the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), contributing to
the national efforts of CONSER, BIBCO, NACO, and SACO; therefore, all
descriptive cataloging is performed in accordance with national standards.
The cataloger also performs the regular metadata maintenance associated with
continuing resources, required not only to assure accurate, clear, and
usable data, but to also promote access and discoverability. The cataloger
should expect to work not only with current materials, but also materials
that span the existing historical holdings of the Library's collection.

The cataloger collaborates with other catalogers as well as Library staff
outside of the Department in an effort to best inform local policies and
procedures as they apply to continuing resources publications. Assists in
the ongoing guidance and instruction of all members of the Technical
Services Department who regularly engage in the management and workflows of
continuing resources. Regularly collaborates on special projects with the
section's library assistants. The cataloger also serves on library
committees, participates in library-wide programs and activities, and is
expected to be active professionally both locally and nationally.

The role of the Continuing Resources section continues to evolve, requiring
its members to be open-minded, flexible, and possess the willingness and
ability to adapt to changing departmental, library, and technology needs.

The cataloger will be expected to possess the following skills:

* strong analytical, communication, organizational, and training
skills;
* strong critical thinking and problem solving abilities required in
the cataloging, the maintenance, and the ongoing issues associated with and
specific to continuing resources;
* ability to adapt to and interpret changes associated with evolving
cataloging rules and standards;
* ability to interpret and understand the relationships between
related works and entities, and to effectively use that knowledge to create
quality bibliographic descriptions and authority records;
* ability to assess the needs of special projects and assignments, and
to establish practical plans and workflows to address these;
*       ability to write and implement procedures;
* ability to work with a diverse staff of people with varying skill
sets;
* ability to prioritize work to ensure that library and department
goals are realized;
* ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a
production-oriented, dynamic environment, with a commitment to professional
development and growth.
