_General description_
Stanford University Libraries (SUL) is seeking a Map Cataloger to work directly
with paper and digital historical and antiquarian maps held in numerous
collections across the campus and in direct support of the David Rumsey Map
Center. The goal of this position is to enable discovery and use of these
materials across a variety of platforms including the library catalog,
geospatial discovery environments, and interactive indexes.
The position is based in the Branner Earth Sciences Library and reports to the
Assistant Director of Geospatial, Cartographic and Scientific Data & Services.
After the David Rumsey Map Center opens, the librarian will also work in Green
Library both cataloging maps and staffing the reference desk on a regular basis.
/The Map Cataloger will:/
* Create discovery metadata for cartographic materials in accordance
with accepted local practice and applicable national standards, or
obtain suitable catalog records when obtainable. Currently,
predominate schemas are RDA applied according to the BIBCO standards
and MODS.
* Assess the metadata requirements for new collections as they are
considered and acquired either through purchase or by digital donation.
* Design, implement, and manage workflows for original and copy
cataloging, using all available resources from the professional
librarian staff to hourly employees and student workers.
* Create project estimates for the cataloging and metadata work that
needs to be completed.
* Work directly with the Digital Library Systems and Services group
and the Metadata Development Unit to set standards, create
crosswalks for metadata transformations (typically to MODS), and
perform quality assurance on those transformations.
* Participate in library-wide projects to make cartographic materials
available through a variety of outlets including the library
catalog, geospatial web portals, exhibit sites, and mobile applications.
* Provide feedback on the display of records across multiple discovery
environments.
* Provide reference support for the Branner Map Collections and staff
the reference desk for the David Rumsey Map Center when it opens.
* Work with the Assistant Director to secure grant funding to work
through the backlogs in the collections, providing project
management and overseeing the work of those hired for the work.
* Participate in relevant professional activities both within and
outside Stanford.
/Required Qualifications/:
* MLIS or a Bachelor’s Degree and equivalent experience.
* Theoretical knowledge of current cataloging procedures and
principles as defined in RDA, AACR2, MARC Bibliographic, Holdings,
and Authorities formats. Ability to rapidly learn and implement new
cataloging procedures and principles adopted by the Department.
(Practical knowledge required for the Associate level.)
* Experience with principles of authority control, including selecting
and applying controlled vocabularies and ontologies (required for
the Associate level).
* Working knowledge and the ability to analyze, and utilize existing
and emerging metadata standards, such as MODS, Dublin Core, METS,
XML, and relevant thesauri or ontologies, as required by special
projects. Ability to provide mapping between different metadata
standards in a dynamic environment.
* Project management skills (experience required for the Associate
level).
* High level of proficiency using PC-based applications (Windows and
Mac, word processing, spreadsheets) and other computer applications
(email, Internet, Integrated Library Systems); high level computer
competency kept up to date through continuous learning.
* Excellent analytical and problem solving skills combined with
attention to detail for complex, detail-oriented work.
* Effective oral and written communication skills.
* Ability to work independently, as a team member, and across
departmental boundaries in a fast-paced environment.
* Flexibility to be organized, productive and effective in a dynamic
environment, involved with a variety of simultaneous projects and
workflows.
* High level of comfort in digital environments coupled with the
ability to read complex visual information.

/Desired Qualifications:/
* Experience with cataloging of cartographic material, antiquarian
maps/atlases, and geospatial materials in digital and analog formats.
* Knowledge of rare materials cataloging standards such as DCRM.
* Advanced knowledge of one modern Western European language in
addition to English; working knowledge of other Western European
languages.
* Familiarity with RDF, XML, and other machine actionable metadata
languages.
