OCLC accelerates shared print initiative with acquisition of SCS
OCLC has acquired

bce9658db72e3a7b1> Sustainable Collection Services (SCS), the industry
leader in providing innovative analysis to help libraries make data-driven
decisions in managing their print book collections.
Libraries are transforming their collections and spaces. The move to
electronic collections, the need for collaborative work spaces in the
library, and growing strains on the library budget all underscore the need
for libraries to work collaboratively to reduce the size of their physical
collections.
OCLC is a natural partner to libraries that want to work collaboratively to
reduce the size of their print collections. OCLC Research is a thought
leader in the cooperative management of print collections. WorldCat and the
OCLC resource sharing network are the most comprehensive collaborative
platform for libraries to make their shared collections known and available.
And OCLC has built a strong partnership with SCS since 2011 to offer
deselection decision-support services to libraries and library consortia.
This acquisition is OCLC's first step in building the suite of services
needed to help its members work together to accomplish these objectives. SCS
offers consulting services as well as access to GreenGlass, its Web
application that allows libraries to explore and visualize their collections
and compare them to others. As a result of the acquisition, all four SCS
employees, Rick Lugg, Ruth Fischer, Eric Redman and Andy Breeding, will join
the OCLC staff.
Current SCS services will continue to be offered to libraries and groups in
need of a proven print management solution. OCLC will also leverage the SCS
technology and expertise to enhance existing services and develop new
solutions to better serve member libraries.
SCS staff will participate in the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Chicago, January
30-February 2, at Booth #1916, adjacent to OCLC in Booth #1818. Please stop
by and find out more about this new addition to your cooperative.
