The BIC Library Metadata Group met by teleconference on January 20th to consider the papers for the upcoming MAC meetings.
2015-01: Defining Values in Field 037 to Indicate a Sequence of Sources of Acquisition. BIC supports the proposal. 2015-02: Adding Dates for Corporate Bodies in Field 046. BIC supports the proposal. 2015-03: Description Conversion Information. BIC considers that there is a legitimate requirement for a new field and that the choice of tag 884 seems reasonable. The field could be defined at the authority as well as bibliographic level. BIC notes that in the proposed definition and scope the word ‘partially’ is problematic - it conflicts with the rationale for the field and the contrast with 883; the field needs to describe the conversion of the whole ‘record’ and as such is useful up until the point where the record is subsequently edited. BIC suggests re-wording of the field definition and scope: ‘Used to provide information about the origin of a MARC record which has been converted by machine from another metadata structure.’ BIC suggests the terminology associated with subfield $k (Identifier of origin description) could be improved. Particularly, the term ‘control number’ in the subfield definition should be substituted with ‘identifier’ since this is more appropriate in the non-MARC context of the source metadata. The term ‘bibliographic’ could be removed if the field were defined at both the authority and bibliographic level. The subfield label could be amended to ‘Identifier of source metadata’. BIC suggests that an additional subfield could be defined for the name of source format in order to render it more easily machine actionable. This could optionally include a version number. 2015-04: Broaden Usage of Field 088. BIC supports the proposal. Examples should be amended to show correct MARC coding. 2015-05: Definition of New Code for Leased Resources in Field 008/07 in the MARC21 Holdings Format. BIC supports the proposal. 2015-06: Defining New Subfield in Field 382 for Coding Number of Ensembles. BIC supports the proposal. Definition should accompany proposed subfield label. 2015-DP01: Recording RDA Format of Notated Music. BIC supports the recommendation of this discussion paper that a new field be defined to code format of notated music. Because it represents expression level information there is a case for coding it at both the authority and bibliographic level. BIC suggests that 348 would be the best choice for tag. The requirement for additional tags to cover other extent of expression elements seems unlikely. A coded equivalent to the term could be defined.
