Attend Library Linked Data in the Cloud webinar to learn more about OCLC's
contribution to library linked data

Register to attend
<https://oclc.webex.com/oclc/onstage/g.php?MTID=e1364f3dbc73c1f483ef0c72858f
36076> this webinar on Thursday, 21 May from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm EDT to
learn more about OCLC's contributions to the transformation of the Internet
from a web of documents to a web of data as described in the forthcoming
book, Library Linked Data in the Cloud: OCLC's Experiments with New Models
of Resource Description, written by Carol Jean Godby, Shenghui Wang and
Jeffrey K. Mixter.

Librarians, archivists, computer scientists, and other professionals
interested in modeling bibliographic descriptions as linked data are invited
to attend this webinar in which the authors will describe the conceptual and
technical challenges involved in publishing linked data derived from
traditional library metadata. This transformation is urgent because it is
now common knowledge that most searches for information start not in the
library, nor even in a Web-accessible library catalog, but elsewhere on the
Internet. Modeling data in a form that the broader Web understands may help
keep libraries relevant in the Digital Information Age.

Join us to gain more insights into linked data from the authors, including
what lessons they learned about linked data as they wrote the book, and how
these lessons helped them to identify and prioritize the next steps for
library linked data.

A recording of this presentation will be made available on our website
<http://www.oclc.org/research/events/2015/05-21.html> following the
webinar.

OCLC Research: 2014 Highlights

OCLC Research: 2014 Highlights describes the mission and goal of OCLC
Research and explains the way in which our work is organized around four
themes:

. Research Collections and Support,

. Data Science,

. Understanding the System-wide Library, and

. User Studies

Each theme is presented in its own section that includes highlights of key
deliverables in 2014, including publications, events and webinars, select
presentations and experimental applications. The OCLC Research Library
Partnership is a key constituency for our work - read about how our staff
engaged with research libraries around shared issues in 2014.

The 2015 finalists for the Hugo Awards-science fiction's most prestigious
award-were released recently, which got some of us wondering what the top
science fiction books of 2014 were for libraries. So here they are
<http://www.oclc.org/research/wtworldcat/topscifi2014.html> , the novels in
the science fiction genre published in 2014 with the largest holdings by
libraries.
