You are cordially invited to the ALCTS Continuing Resources Cataloging Forum
on Monday, June 29, 1:00-2:30pm, at the Moscone Convention Center North
Building, Room 132. To observe the 40th anniversary of the ISSN Network, in
addition to update reports from CONSER and CC:DA, this forum will feature
three presentations to shed light on different ways ISSN facilitates the
resource discovery. Agenda is as follows:

1. Welcome and introductions / TJ Kao (Chinese technical services
librarian at Yale University Library)

2. CONSER report / Les Hawkins (CONSER Coordinator at Library of
Congress)

3. CC:DA report / Adolfo Tarango (Assistant Director, Metadata Services
at University of California in San Diego)

4. ISSN Program

Regina Reynolds (Director, U.S. ISSN Center and Head, ISSN Section at
Library of Congress)

Since its inception more than 40 years ago, ISSN has become a crucial
identifier in the chain of trade, a key for serials processing, essential
for access to journals and their articles, an identifier used by the US
Postal Service and by rights management agencies, and much more. This
presentation will review the history of the U.S. ISSN Center, the evolution
of the ISSN standard, current uses and issues regarding ISSN, and ISSN's
potential in the linked data environment.

Steve Shadle (Serials Access Librarian at University of Washington)

It is not uncommon for publishers and contact providers to only provide
current title and ISSN (rather than an entire journal title history) to
knowledge base providers. This discussion will provide an overview of how
two knowledge bases (Serials Solutions and ExLibris Alma) manage this
metadata and the resulting user display and access issues.

Diane Boehr (Head of the Cataloging and Metadata Management Sections at
National Library of Medicine)

NLM was one of the earliest supporters and users of the ISSN. This
presentation looks at the history and current use of ISSN data in NLM's
indexing activities, as well as some local practices adopted to ensure
quality data in our article citations.
