Dave Tyckoson Associate Dean Henry Madden Library California State University, Fresno _____ A Unique ALA Midwinter Travel and Conference Experience: ALA Boston 2016 by Private Rail Car Boston, MA January 1-16, 2016 If you are interested in a conference experience like no other, join a small select group of travelers on the trip of a lifetime. We are chartering the Silver Iris for a cross-country trip from Los Angeles to Boston for the 2016 midwinter conference. The Silver Iris is a 1950s sleeping car originally used on the Denver Zephyr that is now in private hands. We will recreate the luxury travel experience of the past, complete with our own chef, porter, and waitress/bartender. The train will be your transportation and your hotel for the conference. Once you check into your room, you are set for the entire trip. On the trip east, we will spend two nights in New Orleans and one day in Washington, DC on the way to Boston. After the conference, we will head west towards the Windy City and Chicago deep dish pizza. We will spend one night and two days in Chicago—think shopping, museums, and great food. After leaving Chicago we will head to Denver (sorry no stay here) and the beautiful Rocky Mountains on our way back to California and the Bay Area. The trip covers 16 days and 15 nights. We have room for a total of ten passengers in addition to our crew of three. Single and Double rooms are available. Every room has its own toilet, sink, and beds that fold into seating areas during the daytime. A shared shower is at the end of the hall. A lounge area and dining area are used for daytime sitting – and you can spend time on the back platform, where you can watch the world go by in the open air. Travelling on a private rail car is similar to a cruise – although much smaller, without the annoying pre-planned shore activities and cruise directors, and with no risk of sinking. We travel at the rear of regularly scheduled Amtrak trains, so exact times may change – but the general schedule is listed below. Cost will be $2,950 per person, which includes transportation, lodging, meals while travelling (lunch and dinner not included while parked in Boston), and drinks for the entire trip. Please contact Dave Tyckoson at [email protected] if you are interested in participating.
