The Library of Congress is pleased to announce that a new version of the CIP Data Block, the cataloging information printed by publishers at the front of the book, has been implemented by the Cataloging in Publication Program effective September 30, 2015.
Over the last two years, the Library of Congress with the assistance of experts from the school, public and academic library communities has been investigating revisions to the CIP Data Block. The new CIP Data Block is the result of an analysis of survey results done in 2014 that asked institutions what should be kept, added, or removed from the CIP Data Block to meet the needs of the twenty-first century bibliographic environment. There are numerous changes to the CIP Data Block, including the use of labels to clearly identify the different components within the block, addition of Resource Description and Access (RDA) and electronic resource data elements, and an LCCN Permalink that links directly to the Library of Congress for easy retrieval of bibliographic records. A link to the summary of the changes, examples of the new CIP Data Block, and a list of MARC fields that are included or excluded can be found at: <http://www.loc.gov/publish/cip/news/index.html> http://www.loc.gov/publish/cip/news/index.html We have also created a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page, which we hope answers most of the questions our users will have about the new features of the CIP Data Block. The FAQ can be found at: <http://www.loc.gov/publish/cip/news/data_faq.html> http://www.loc.gov/publish/cip/news/data_faq.html There is also an article on the process the Library of Congress used to develop the new CIP Data Block at: <http://www.loc.gov/publish/cip/news/lccn_art.html> http://www.loc.gov/publish/cip/news/lccn_art.html If you have any further questions or comments about the new CIP Data Block , you can send them to Karl Debus-López, Chief, U.S. Programs, Law, and Literature Division at the Library of Congress at <mailto:[email protected]> [email protected].
