Presenter: Janis L. Young

 

Title: By who and for whom? Developing LC Demographic Group Terms

 

Summary:

Library of Congress Demographic Group Terms (LCDGT) is intended to describe the 
characteristics of the intended audiences of library resources, and the 
characteristics of their creators and contributors. Janis L. Young, senior 
cataloging policy specialist at the Library of Congress and the vocabulary’s 
coordinator, will discuss the purpose and structure of LCDGT, its current 
status, and plans for further development.  She will also relate some anecdotes 
about interesting problems that have arisen while developing the vocabulary. 
Finally, she will briefly present the general principles for assignment of the 
terms.

 

Presenter Biography:

Janis L. Young is a senior cataloging policy specialist in the Library of 
Congress’ Policy and Standards Division (PSD).  She is the coordinator of the 
projects to develop genre/form, medium of performance, and demographic group 
terms.  She maintains LC subject headings and classification numbers and is the 
editor of both the Subject Headings Manual and the Classification and 
Shelflisting Manual.  Ms. Young serves as LC’s liaison to several ALA 
committees, including the ALCTS/CaMMS/Subject Analysis Committee.
