Works in Progress Webinar: All About OPenn

Will Noel and Doug Emery, University of Pennsylvania

Wednesday, March 23, 2016 12:00 pm Eastern Daylight Time / (9:00-10:00 am
Pacific Daylight Time / 4:00-5:00 pm London)

This webinar look at the challenges of and solutions for presenting cultural
heritage materials as Open Data. It will focus on OPenn
<http://openn.library.upenn.edu/> , a new website that hosts open data from
cultural heritage institutions in the Philadelphia area. OPenn will present
the data for a 16 institution-wide effort to digitize all the medieval
manuscripts in the city with the help of a $500,000 CLIR grant. Speakers
Will Noel and Doug Emery together have created several open data sets,
including the Archimedes Palimpsest, the Galen Syriac Palimpsest, the
Walters Art Museum's illuminated manuscripts, and now the materials on
OPenn.

This webinar will be of interest to the Open Data Community, and all those
who are struggling with issues of data preservation and presentation in the
cultural heritage sector, from small institutions to larger ones.

A new blog from OCLC, Next

OCLC has launched a new blog: Next <http://oclc.org/blog/> . As you might
guess from the title, it's on what is next for libraries, librarians, and
the communities they serve. Colleagues from OCLC Membership and Research
will be blogging alongside others and we encourage you to check it out. As a
sample, Roy Tennant wrote Getting started with linked data
<http://www.oclc.org/blog/main/getting-started-with-linked-data-3/> . Roy
says, "In this short piece I try to make linked data understandable and
explain why it is important (making data more machine-actionable) and how it
will have an impact on libraries (by making many of workflows more efficient
and enhancing the user discovery experience)." There's more to explore now
and in the future. Add this blog reader or aggregator or follow @OCLC
<https://twitter.com/OCLC> on Twitter to see what's Next.

Of note from OCLC Research

Data modeling and reuse project receives NEH grant

OCLC Research joins colleagues from Stanford University, the University of
Michigan and the Institute for Field Research (IFR) in assisting the
Alexandria Archive Institute (AAI) on a three-year data modeling and reuse
project that has been funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities
(NEH). Research Scientist Ixchel Faniel, Ph.D. is working with the team to
interview and observe archaeologists doing field work in the three
geographical areas and archaeologists interested in reusing data from those
areas. Congratulations to Ixchel and colleagues for winning this grant.
