Many research libraries are taking on a new role to support the research
data management needs of their universities. In many cases, there are few
resources to support the activity, and a single librarian may have only the
title or responsibility to get started. This new report begins by suggesting
very low-overhead ways to start a management program and goes on to describe
services that can be added to build out the program. References to other
resources are included.

What makes people trust news in the digital world?

A new study by The Media Insight Project shows that trust and reliability in
news can be broken down into specific factors, such as accuracy, timeliness
and clarity. The study also finds that in the digital age, several new
factors largely unexamined beforesuch as the intrusiveness of ads,
navigability, load times and having the latest detailsalso are critical in
determining whether consumers consider a publisher competent and worthy of
trust.

In an OCLC Next blog post, Roy Tennant suggests that it's time to start
making the possibilities of linked data real. He believes that much of that
work will be done by programmers and catalogers who want to address some
specific, local needs of their community. And he points to tools and
training that can help make that happen.

Certain things are wonderful because they are unique. Artwork, musical
performances, memories, the important people in our lives. In these cases,
we treasure differences.
That is not true, however, for software development. While a service or a
feature may perform a very specialized task, the background infrastructure
isnt helped by inconsistencies. Every time you add a different piece of
hardware, operating system, software platform or process, you multiply the
number of ways youll need to maintain your code, impacting quality and
driving costs up.
In the technology realm, these inconsistencies are referred to as
snowflakes. I like to refer to the process of eliminating these
inconsistencies as melting snowflakes. Because, just like in real life,
snowflakes may be interesting, but theyre not great for software
developmentthey often make you slow down or slip up when you want to move
quickly.

Next steps for WorldCat Discovery and FirstSearch

OCLC plans to develop a new version of FirstSearch with the full-featured
searching of WorldCat required by many researchers and library staff. This
search functionality will also be available to WorldCat Discovery
subscribers. The new version of FirstSearch will have the same look and feel
of todays WorldCat Discovery, so gaining familiarity with WorldCat
Discovery now will support a smooth transition to the new version of
FirstSearch when it is released.
