Pre-coordinate vs Post-coordinate subject access: pros and cons and a real life experience… Description: Most catalogers assign pre-coordinated subject strings such as Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) or Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). However, many catalog users use keyword searching rather than browsing subject indexes catalogers provide. The first speaker will discuss the general pros and cons of pre- vs post- coordinate subject access; the second, why NLM decided to go with post-coordination internally in 1998, but continued to provide pre-coordination for subscribers to its data until 2016. Sponsored by the ALCTS Cataloging and Metadata Management Section (CaMMS). Co-Sponsored by ALCTS CaMMS Faceted Subject Access Interest Group. Speakers: Peter Fletcher Team Leader, International and Knowledge Management Teams, Cyrillic Catalog Librarian & Metadata Specialist UCLA Cataloging & Metadata Center Los Angeles, California Diane L. Boehr Head, Cataloging & Metadata Management Section National Library of Medicine Bethesda, Maryland Follow the conversation #ALCTSAC16 Please contact me with any questions. -Liz Bodian, Chair, Subject Analysis Committee -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "[email protected]" group.
