On Behalf Of Charles Wilt Dear Colleagues,

I'm chair of the 2017 ALCTS President's Program Committee. The President's
Program will be held Monday, June 26, during then President Vicki Sipe's
tenure. We certainly have our work cut for us to follow Norm Medeiros'
outstanding program.

The Committee is working now to identify an outstanding speaker.

The Committee has a second task to complete, planning the 2017 ALCTS
Midwinter Symposium. The Symposium will take place on Friday, January 20th,
at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Atlanta.

Past Symposia have focused on broad issues affecting libraries and
librarianship. This past Midwinter Symposium was an excellent addition,
"Re-envisioning "Technical Services" to Transform Libraries: Identifying
Leadership and Talent Management Practices."

The Committee has decided to expand its search for a topic by asking ALCTS
members for your input into potential topics for the Symposium. Julie Reese
has created a form for you to make suggestions. When you click on the link,
you'll be asked for the topic, working title, brief description, speaker
ideas and your contact information. The topic could be one you are
interested in learning more about or one that is affecting libraries now and
into the future. If you are attending the ALA Annual Conference in Orlando
and as you navigate various programs and Interest Group sessions, please be
thinking whether any of those could become the Midwinter Symposium. Please
remember, that the Symposium is an all day event, so any topic you suggest
would have to fill that time.
Here is the link: https://alctsprogram.wufoo.com/forms/r19nsnz90qscfv5/

The deadline for your idea is July 5th which will give you time to suggest a
topic once you return from Annual.

The Committee appreciates your participation and looks forward to receiving
many excellent ideas.

Sincerely,

Charles Wilt

On Behalf Of Katherine Risseeuw Please join the Promoting Preservation
Interest Group on Sunday, June 26, 10:30-11:30am, for presentations and a
discussion about nontraditional preservation projects and ways to better
involve preservation professionals.

The co-chairs will present an array of projects from archives and libraries
around the country who are using nontraditional means to talk about
preservation and access, specifically in public libraries and small
community organizations. We will highlight how the importance of personal
digital archiving, oral histories, and local history are successfully
translated to communities through a variety of projects involving book arts,
hiking, folk music festivals, and public DIY digitization.

The projects specifically covered include:

* Indian Neck Folk Festival's efforts in audio preservation
education.

* Appalachian Mountain Club's preservation grants and extreme
outreach of hiking to mountain properties that hold collections.

* Chair Community Art Center's "Chair City Oral History Book Series"
that involves community members (including youth) in printing and binding
regional oral histories.

* DC Public Library's MemoryLab, a center for patrons to digitize
personal histories.

We hope to generate a conversation about how and why these projects fall
outside of the "traditional" preservation community that is represented at
PARS. This discussion was born out of the difficulties encountered while
trying to line up speakers for this session. Those involved in these and
other similar projects are typically not ALA attendees, especially
PARS-affiliated professionals. How do we become more involved in these
initiatives? Is there a role for us? How can we share our knowledge and
skills with organizations embarking on preservation-based programming?

Sunday, June 26
10:30-11:30am
OCCC W202A

We are also soliciting nominations for a new PPIG co-chair for 2017-2018.

Thanks,
Katie and Eva, Co-Chairs
