Library linked data survey suggests: focus on goals, not technology

According to an OCLC Research survey, libraries publish linked data to surface
their collections to a larger web audience as well as to demonstrate what can
be done with datasets as linked data. They consume linked data in their
applications to provide local users with a richer search experience and to
enhance local records with data from other sources. This analysis of 112 linked
data projects is a window into future opportunities and a snapshot of a library
linked data environment that is still evolving. Ninety institutions in 20
countries participated in the survey.

The digital news flow is mobile and social

Twenty years ago, only 12% of US adults got news online. Today, that number is
81%, says a new Pew Research Center report. About six in ten (62%) get news
through social media—a figure that rises to 84% for 18- to 29-year-olds. In
addition, a large majority of the public (72%) gets news on a mobile device. As
consumers have changed the ways they access news, they also have new ways to
interact with it—and new sources to inform them.

 The needs of one

By Drew Bordas

At ALA in Orlando, we heard a great talk from Amy Rossi from the Disney
Institute about Disney’s approach to customer service. I'm glad we've had a
chance to share some notes from her presentation, and some thoughts from a few
of the librarians who attended. I'd like, though, to take one final look at
some of the insights she shared, this time from the point of view of customer
service here at OCLC. As head of our customer operations team, it's not just a
subject that I find fascinating, it's also my passion and my responsibility.

Star Treks Mr. Spock famously tells us that, "the needs of the many outweigh
the needs of the few," or, as interjected by Captain Kirk, "the one." That may
hold true philosophically, but not when it comes to customer service. While new
products or features may be developed to meet the needs of the many, service
questions and concerns are almost always about the needs of "the one." And
that's where we get into the SPOC (Single Point of Contact) Paradox.

Share and preserve your unique collections

St. Ambrose University is using CONTENTdm to create digital collections and to
provide easy access to its unique holdings. The Catich Collection provides
access to the artwork of Father Edward Catich. Father Catich, one of the
world's finest calligraphers, was an international authority on stone incising,
typography and stained glass fabrication, and the foremost authority on the
Roman alphabet, its origin, nature and history. The university owns an
estimated 5,000 Catich works, ranging from sketchbooks and small drawings to
major pieces of art—primarily watercolors, ink drawings and slates.
