The Smithsonian Libraries invites applications for a collegial and
resourceful professional to fill a new exciting position of Cataloging and
Bibliographic Access Librarian. The incumbent reports to the Head of
Original Cataloging/Principal Cataloger, Discovery Services Division, within
the Smithsonian Libraries (SIL).  The Cataloging and Bibliographic Access
Librarian is responsible for creating original catalog records on OCLC and
in SIRIS (the Smithsonian Institution Research Information System) and with
facilitating access and discovery of materials in the Libraries'
collections.  Smithsonian Libraries is a participant in the Program for
Cooperative Cataloging (PCC), and the incumbent is expected to contribute
program records, via OCLC, under the guidelines of the PCC's constituent
programs, NACO (Name Authority Cooperative Program) and BIBCO (Monographic
Bibliographic Record Cooperative Program).  The incumbent also works with
metadata processing and record sets for batch editing and importing into
SIRIS.

 

Specifically, the Cataloging and Bibliographic Access Librarian:

*       Creates and contributes MARC cataloging for all material types to
OCLC and to the Smithsonian Institution Research Information System (SIRIS),
according to national standards and local policies.  Much of the collection
material is highly specialized or complex, and a large proportion of the
work is in various foreign languages.
*       Contributes authority records to NACO and creates BIBCO
bibliographic records.  Performs authority control for personal names,
corporate bodies, series, and subjects.  
*       Creatively uses MarcEdit and other tools to work with large record
sets and undiscovered collection materials.  Performs batch-loading and
batch-editing of catalog and metadata records, and subsequent quality
control, in SIRIS and OCLC. 
*       Applies metadata using the MARC standard for digital materials and
legacy collections. Converts metadata from digital environments into
traditional MARC library records and systems.
*       Participates in the development, troubleshooting and use of
cataloging software and tools.
*       Provides support to evaluate, share and disseminate catalog and
metadata records for collection materials using Macro Express, tools in the
OCLC Connexion Client software application, and SIRSI/Dynix Horizon.

 

Required Qualifications

 

*       Ability to create and edit descriptive MARC records on OCLC and in
an integrated library system, using current national cataloging standards,
principles, and practices.  
*       Skill with RDA, AACR2, ISBD, and LC classification, along with
controlled vocabularies, such as LCSH, AAT, and Library of Congress Name
Authorities.
*       Skill with MarcEdit, MacroExpress, and/or other data manipulation
software.
*       General knowledge of scientific and scholarly publications and
communications at a level sufficient to assess, catalog, and classify
research material properly.
*       Familiarity with library linked data principals and applications
(BIBFRAME, EAD, MODS, RDF, TEI, XML, etc.).
*       Familiarity with a subject area relevant to the Institution's areas
of research or collections such as natural history; tropical biology;
anthropology; American, African American and Asian art; history and culture;
horticulture; the history of science and technology; or decorative and fine
arts.
*       Reading knowledge of at least one language other than English, with
a working knowledge of other foreign languages sufficient for original
cataloging as well as complex copy cataloging.  Must be able to work with
European languages (French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Russian).
*       Skill with standard desktop applications such as MS Word, Excel, and
MS Access. 
*       Ability with written and oral communication skills as shown by
written communication, reports, proposals, publications, or public
presentations.
