Dojo! It goes beyond just ajax. It encompasses widgets. Want to do SVG/VML chats? Dojo got it covered with dojo.chart. Dojo seems to be the only JS framework with a packaging system, so its fairly unique, it can load extra code bits on demand. However, since it encompasses so much it seems to be on the slower side of frameworks. I would advise to use mod_deflate and build a minimal dojo build and require stuff on demand.

Mind you, other people prefer Dojo or YUI.  Basically it's up to you
