I did the CPAN install again for CGI::Simple in the process of generating
install error data, and it installed this time without any error message. I
was then able to complete the Catalyst installation, so I guess the problem
has disappeared.

I'd advise that if you don't tell us what went wrong with the CGI::Simple
install we're unlikely to be able to tell you how to fix it :)
Seriously, chuck the install log in an e-mail then those of us with CentOS
VMs handy can follow along at home and see if we get the same results.
