Oh ok, actually my problem came down to me trying to use Cache::Memcached
plugin.  Not sure why that wouldn't work but switching to Cache::FastMmap
fixes it.   Any ideas on this?  By the way very nice plugin :)

What I do is try to upload a huge file or something, 100MB+, that
will usually give you enough time to see if it's working.
