Of course, but your solution is the standart solution where static content is public.
The previous poster was talking about situations where static content is protected by application level logic.
In those situations your solution will not work, and so far the best solution I found is reproxy.
There is also a mod_sec_download in the Lighttpd distribution that might solve some cases.
