Barb Hawkins of Arvada, Colorado, has believed in angels her entire life. "Angel statues, pictures, cross stitchings are all over my house. We have gardens on the south side of our house, and among the flowers I have also put angels." When she was in her forties, Barb had an intense inner healing, which set her free from the pain of some childhood traumas, and during this time she drew especially close to the angels. "They are a treasured part of my life."
A few years ago on the Feast of the Guardian Angels (October 2nd), Barb was attending mass, sitting in her pew and listening to the readings. Slowly she became aware that the WHOLE sanctuary was completely filled with angels. "Some were kneeling with their hands folded in prayer," Barb remembers. "Some were standing in an attitude of praise, with their hands lifted high. They were all in white gowns, some had wings and some did not." Barb stared, incredulous. The angels looked as real as any human in the church. But how could this be? Then she saw one huge angel standing at the steps leading up to the sanctuary, with his back to the congregation. "He was as tall as the very high ceiling, and his clothes were the most gorgeous colors---greens, aquas, blues and golds, and he wore leg armor which was copper-colored. I am sure it was Michael the Archangel." Barb watched, astonished. No one else in the church seemed to notice anything out of order. She was afraid to blink for fear the exquisite scene in front of her would disappear. But the angels remained where they were, including Michael, until consecration time. "They then prostrated themselves on the floor of the altar area, and knelt in adoration until after communion, when they returned to their prayerful attitude." Amazingly, the angels stayed in Barb's view until Mass had ended, and then slowly faded away. "I needn't tell you how this affected me," Barb says today. "One other time, I saw angels standing behind a friend of mine who was very ill." The woman went to heaven shortly afterwards, and her husband was consoled when Barb told him that angels had supported his wife. But Barb is just an ordinary person, like the rest of us. Why would these things happen to her? She doesn't know. Nor do the people of Holy Family. But they are thankful, and feel very blessed. It's obvious that heaven is watching over them all.
