A HUSBAND and wife who are both battling cancer
have launched a fundraising appeal in a desperate
bid to save their family home.

Andrew and Joanne Murphy live in a small cottage
outside the east Limerick village of Cappamore
with their four children, who range in age from 10 to 22.

But as a result of their illnesses, they now need
to renovate their home to accommodate their family's needs.

Andrew was first diagnosed with cancer of the
bowel four years ago. This has since spread to
his liver. Joanne had to leave her job in Dell
after her husband was first diagnosed. And more
crippling news followed when Joanne (42) was
found to have breast cancer last Christmas.

"I finished chemo, had my breast off, then had
chemo again and now have to face 35 radon treatments," Joanne said.

"The journey has been very traumatic and
emotional for us as we feel we need our house to
be adapted and renovated for our physical needs and our children's needs."

A public appeal has been issued to help the
family raise the vital finance to renovate their small family cottage.

"We cannot afford to fix the house, nor do we
have the strength to do it ourselves. We have
received funding from the county council and we
are awaiting voluntary services to assist us as
well, but we need some other financial assistance," Joanne commented.

"The council are able to give €16,500 for the
work that needs to be done, including a new
bathroom and ramps for wheelchairs. But the
problem is the best quote for the job is over €43,000."

Sweethearts

The childhood sweethearts, who married 23 years
ago, both have tremendous faith in their religion
and they built a grotto to Our Lady after they were diagnosed with cancer.

"Our faith has kept both of us going through this
and we are hoping Our Lady can bring us through it," Joanne added.

Anyone wishing to donate to the account to help
with the renovation fundraising can do so to:
AIB, Upper William Street, Limerick. Sort code:
93-55-14, account number: 13608043.

Lord, may everything we do begin with Your
inspiration and continue with Your help,
so that all our prayers and works may begin in You and by You be happily ended.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
