By <http://www.catholicnews.com>Catholic News Service VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Roughly six months after Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the United States, the pope met privately with the officers of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. After the Oct. 23 meeting, Cardinal Francis E. George, conference president, told <http://www.catholicnews.com>Catholic News Service he did not feel it was appropriate to discuss details of the private meeting. Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas of Tucson, Ariz., conference vice president, and Msgr. David Malloy, USCCB general secretary, also attended the meeting. Cardinal George and Bishop Kicanas were in Rome for the Oct. 5-26 meeting of the world Synod of Bishops on the Bible. But when the synod was not in session, they and Msgr. Malloy visited Vatican offices, as the USCCB leadership usually does each October. The meetings allow Vatican officials and representatives of the U.S. bishops to discuss issues of common concern. The discussions usually include a briefing about matters on the agenda of the U.S. bishops' fall general meeting, big events in the life of the U.S. church and major issues and trends in U.S. society.
