The Sorrowful Mysteries

Rev. Thomas J. Euteneuer
2003

The Agony in the Garden

Reading
“And to strengthen him an angel from heaven
appeared to Jesus. He was in such agony and he
prayed so fervently that his sweat became like
drops of blood falling on the ground. When he
rose from prayer and returned to his disciples,
he found them sleeping from grief. He said to
them: ‘Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that
you may not undergo the test.’” (Luke 22: 43-46)

Prayer
Dear Lord, there are many men and women who in
times of crisis find themselves facing the very
grave temptation of killing an innocent child.
Grant them the grace to affirm the value of human
life at all times and protect them from those who
would convince them to commit selfish deeds.
Bring to conversion of heart all who offer only
lies and false solutions to the crises that women face.

The Scourging at the Pillar

Reading
“They led Jesus away to the high priest. But he
was silent and answered notion.” (Mark 14: 53, 61)

“When it was morning the bound him, led him away
and handed him over to Pilate.” (Matthew 27: 1-2)

“Pilate went out to the Jews and said to them: ‘I
find no guilt in him.’ Then Pilate took Jesus and
had him scourged.” (John 18: 38; 19: 1)

Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, in your scourging and death
you submitted your whole body to punishment for
the sake of the guilty. Pour forth from your
sorrowful wounds the healing grace of salvation
for all those ministers of death who kill the
innocent every day and are caught in the trap of
death. May our sufferings in the pro-life
movement unite with yours and bring all of the
servants of death out of their darkness and into the light of faith.

The Crowning with Thorns

Reading
“Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus
inside the praetorium and gathered the whole
cohort around him. They threw a scarlet cloak
around him. Weaving a crown out of thorns, they
placed it on his head and a reed in his right hand.” (Matthew 27, 27-29)

“They began to salute him with: ‘Hail, King of
the Jews!’ and kept striking his head with a reed
and spitting upon him. They knelt before him.” (Mark 15: 18-19)

Prayer
Dearest Lord, you offered with generous heart all
the sufferings that were inflicted upon you in
the crowning with thorns for the salvation of
sinners. May our sufferings too be the cause for
the remission of sin for those who promote the
works of death in our world, and may they one day
be granted the grace of true conversion of heart.

The Carrying of the Cross

Reading
“They took Jesus, and carrying the cross himself
he went out to Golgotha.” (John 19: 16-17)

“A large crowd of people followed Jesus,
including many women who mourned and lamented
him. Jesus turned to them and said: ‘Daughters of
Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for
yourselves and for your children.’” (Luke 23: 27-28)

Prayer
Lord Jesus, you know that there are many
abortionists who lay great crosses on the backs
of women and will not lift a finger to help them
when the procedure is finished. Grant these
ministers of the culture of death a profound
conversion of heart so that they may becomes true
advocates of the dignity of women and repudiate
the works of death by taking up their cross every day in imitation of you.

The Crucifixion

Reading
“Now two others, both criminals, were led away
with him to be executed, one on his right, the
other on his left. Then Jesus said, ‘Father,
forgive them, they know not what they do.’ Then
one of the criminals said, ‘Jesus, remember me
when you come into your kingdom.’ Jesus replied
to him, ‘Today you will be with me in Paradise.’" (Luke 23: 32-34, 39, 42-43)

“Jesus cried out in a loud voice, said: ‘Father,
into your hands I commend my spirit.’ And when he
had said this he breathed his last.” (Luke 23: 46)

Prayer
Dear Jesus, you were crowned King of all creation
because you gave yourself over to the Father’s
plan unto the very last drop of your Precious
Blood. May the sufferings that evil men
perpetrate on innocent children not be held
against them but be the cause of their
conversion, and may they, like the repentant
thief, find their way into your kingdom through a
heartfelt acceptance of your offer of mercy.

Lord, may everything we do begin with Your
inspiration and continue with Your help,
so that all our prayers and works may begin in You and by You be happily ended.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
