Sue - the Mass is always capitalized. It is the  Sacrifice of the New 
Covenant. This is standard English usage. I understand that  many are not 
taught 
this, and others refuse to capitalize the word because of a  vague 
egalitarianism. 
These people refuse to capitalize "God" as  well.
 
Yet the rule remains. The masses may attend  the Mass but the Mass is the 
Mass.
