I canceled my Newsweek subscription today

newsweekcover.jpg

I canceled my Newsweek subscription today. They get to return $84
dollars to me in the mail which I think I'll give to someone who
needs it more than I. I've been a subscriber since 1993 and a
tolerant one at that - we all know they don't even bother concealing
the bias anymore - the Obamania this past fall was nauseating. I know
religious devotion and worship when I see it and this was clearly
that. But one glance at the issue that showed up in my mailbox today
and I knew this would be my last. You can read the cover yourself and
the <http://www.newsweek.com/id/172653/page/1>article here.

When I was looking around for a graphic of the cover to plop in the
post here I discovered that the Wall Street Journal today is
reporting that
<http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122902553783299119.html?mod=googlenews_wsj>Newsweek<http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122902553783299119.html?mod=googlenews_wsj>

is cutting staff because of its weakening financial position. Idiots.
Do you think they will figure out why they are losing readership?
Neither do I. They are pushing an agenda regardless of the bottom line.

Though you won't find them hanging on my wall, I do have degrees from
reputable seminaries. I'm telling you only so this next comment
carries more credibility - there is no religious case for gay
marriage. Pro-gay theology is a strong delusion in religious circles
today but you only get there by doing violence to the sacred text.
And I'm not going to shift my focus in this blog to debating that
with any of you - if you want a solid read that backs up my statement
<http://www.amazon.com/Gay-Gospel-Pro-Gay-Advocates-Misread/dp/0736918345>here
you go. To date I've not devoted one post in this blog to
homosexuality, nor is there a sentence until now that the gay
community could interpret as a jab. The haters will surely fire back
at me now but there are a number of gay people in our church who will
tell you I'm not a hater.

Yesterday was "call in gay day" at work. The reports I've seen say it
didn't amount too much. Apparently it was to show America how much we
depend on gay people everyday. Until somebody told me that, at first
I honestly I didn't get it. We call in sick to work when we are sick
- to call in gay seemed to me an admission that it's a sickness. Yet,
I don't think it's a sickness, it's more a brokenness and God loves
and is inclined to the broken.

As many gay people as I've angered so far in this post, there are
surely Christians reading this wondering how I could be okay with gay
people in our church. Some weekends I'll admit I'm surprised they
keep coming back - especially when I was talking a couple years ago
about the need for a federal marriage amendment. But the message at
Church at the Gate isn't anti-gay. It's pro-God and all I ask is for
everyone who comes to be open to God touching whatever part of their
life he wants to touch that day - and I promise not to push God's
timing on when he chooses to touch certain areas or issues in a
person's life - I'm just working hard at creating an atmosphere where
God is free to move and people feel loved and welcomed.

What I'm not doing is what Newsweek is doing this week, changing the
Bible to endorse however people want to live. Churches that are doing
this are empty. Magazines that are doing this are cutting staff.
People want
