The Vatican has given Roman Catholics its blessing to worship with
the help of a new digital prayerbook for iPhones and iPods.

The iBreviary application delivers daily prayers to Apple users in
English, Spanish, Italian, Latin or French. The app is available for
download online at the iTunes store for US$0.99.

The app is the brainchild of 35-year-old Italian priest Father Paolo
Padrini and software developer Dimitri Giani.

At the moment there are three sections, Padrini said in an Italian
interview available online at NECN.com. The sections include: bible
passages, prayers and hymns.

"Now, you can use the iPhone like an electronic missal book," Padrini said.

After a free trial period, iBreviary was reportedly downloaded 10,000
times in Italy. The product was officially launched on Dec. 14.

"Beautiful graphics and layout," wrote one iTunes user. The app
currently has a five-star rating on iTunes.

The secretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications,
Monsignor Paul Tighe, endorses the app as a way to share Jesus'
message with the world.

"I suppose the church is learning to use the new technologies
primarily as tool or as a means of evangelizing," Tighe said in the
online interview.

"This is one example where young believers, young priests, religious
lay people are using their knowledge of their own culture to engage fully."

iTunes may be new to the Vatican, but many Catholics have long
embraced the forum. Numerous U.S. parishes have been making Sunday
mass available through the popular online store for the past couple of years.

Part of the revenues from the download of iBreviary will fund the
restoration of a children's summer camp in Italy.
