French check-out girl becomes best-selling author

'The tribulations of a check-out girl' is set to be translated into English

Anna Sam, who is 29, spent eight years behind a
beeping till at a branch of Leclerc in the north west city of Rennes.

She took a part-time university diploma in
literature and, after starting an internet blog
as recently as January, has become a literary sensation.

Her recently published book, "Les Tribulations
d'une Caissiere" (The tribulations of a check-out
girl), has to date sold more than 100,000 copies,
and is set to be translated into English. There
are even plans for a film adaptation.

Ms Sam describes her job next to a conveyor belt
as "one of the most desirable vantage points from
which to enjoy the full panoply of human idiocy".

A list of everyday characters includes show offs
whose baskets contain nothing but large size
condoms, and unpleasant customers who carry on
with mobile phone conversations instead of saying good morning.

Others go to inordinate lengths to hide items
such as toilet paper, while thieves will think
nothing of stuffing CDs into camembert cheese.

Predatory male customers are also a constant
problem, with Ms Sam particulalry disliking those
who ask ambiguously "are you open?", or "are you available?"

Ms Sam's usual reply was: "I am not but my till is."

Portraying supermarkets as erotic places, Ms Sam
writes: "You would be astonished by the number of
kisses stolen in the aisles (even in the toilet
paper department), the langorous looks exchanged
between the charcuterie and fish counters, the
bottoms and breasts felt in the frozen food department."

Ms Sam, who has written to senior politicians
calling for better working conditions for
France's check-out women, calculates that she
said hello 250 times a day, thank you 500 times a
day and "have you got a loyalty card" 200 times a day.

She scanned some 20 items a minute and lifted 800
kilos an hour for a monthly salary equivalent to around £850.

Ms Sam now hopes that she will make a living as a
full time writer or, if not, get a part-time job
in a book shop; one where there are no conveyor belts.

Prayer for Unborn Life:
O GOD OF LIFE AND LOVE, You have given us the
gift to participate with You to bring new life
into the world. But, all too often, the mother's
womb, which should be a nursery of life, becomes
instead a place of it's destruction.

Help us to remove this evil and ensure respect
for all life made in Your image and likeness,
called to fulfill its promise on this earth,
and destined to find a home with you for all eternity.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, Our Lord, Our God, Our Savior, and Our ALL.
Amen.
