A 107-year-old woman in China has announced she is looking for a husband.

Nine decades after deciding men were simply too frightening, Wang
Guiying has finally overcome her qualms and decided to look for a husband.

Miss Wang, who lives in the south-western Chinese city of Chongqing,
decided the time was ripe to marry after worrying that her nephews
and nieces were becoming too old to look after her. The youngest is now 60.

She has dispatched them to find a potential partner for what remains
of her life, though they have decided to limit the search to those
also over 100, so they will have something in common to talk about.

"Although helping others makes me happy, I have gradually become a
big burden for my family members," she told her local newspaper.
"That's especially so now, as I watch my nieces and nephews grow
older and their children also get tied up with their own families."

Miss Wang was born into a salt merchant's family, and grew up with an
older sister, who died young, and a younger brother.

She said that as a child she often heard her aunt being beaten by her
uncle until she would hide and cry in the woodshed, and discovered
that in the brutally patriarchal world of the China of the time life
was similar for many married women.

"Every other married couple lived the same life," she said. "Marriage
was too horrifying.

"My younger brother was happy after he got married, but I was still
afraid of marriage."

She fell into poverty after her father died, and spent most of her
life working the land. At the age of 74, she went to live with her
brother's children, though she was able to care for herself
adequately until she broke a leg at the age of 102.

How a centenarian husband will help where her nephews and nieces
could not is unclear, but government officials have suggested her
family start scouring the local old people's homes.

Prayer for Unborn Life:
O GOD OF LIFE AND LOVE, You have given us the gift to participate
with You to bring new life into the world. But, all too often, the
mother's womb, which should be a nursery of life, becomes instead a
place of it's destruction.

Help us to remove this evil and ensure respect for all life made in
Your image and likeness, called to fulfill its promise on this earth,
and destined to find a home with you for all eternity.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, Our Lord, Our God, Our Savior, and Our ALL.
Amen.
