Italian clinic backs down in Eluana case

An Italian clinic that had offered to help end the life of Eluana
Englaro, who is said to be in an irreversible coma, in accordance
with a landmark "right to die" court ruling has withdrawn.

ANSA reports the publicly assisted clinic in the Friuli-Venezia
Giulia region offered its services in December after the Lombardy
region, where Eluana is cared for by nuns at a Lecco clinic, refused
to offer clinics or health workers to help 38 year old Eluana Englaro
die despite the right to die verdict from Italy's supreme court.

But a last minute guideline issued by Health Minister Maurizio
Sacconi stating that the removal of feeding tubes from patients in a
vegetative state was "illegal" halted her transfer from Lecco.

The clinic said it had been forced to withdraw its offer in light of
the legal "tangle" and expressed its regret.

"If the clinic were to offer hospitality to Eluana for the court
ruling (to be carried out), the minister could take steps that would
put the running of the clinic, and the jobs of 300 people, at risk,"
it explained.

In December, Sacconi suggested that there could be "administrative
consequences" if the clinic did not follow the guideline, which some
observers claimed was a veiled threat to strip it of its funding and
certification.

Beppino Englaro, who has fought for more than a decade for a
dignified end to his daughter's life, and Eluana's lawyer Franca
Alessio said they "respected" the clinic's decision.

The Cassation Court in November confirmed a Milan appeals court
decision that the feeding tube could be removed from Eluana, who has
been in a permanent vegetative state for almost 17 years following a
car accident.

The ruling has split Italy, with Catholic politicians and the Vatican
claiming it authorises euthanasia and libertarians hailing it as a
victory for individual liberty.

Beppino Englaro has yet to find a clinic willing to remove the tube.
